Practice Bombing Range No. 2 was constructed after June 1943 on an estimated 1,600 acres at the border of the reservation near Lockwood, in an area designated Maneuver and Bivouac HL-4. Practice Bombing Range No. 2 was used by the Thirty Fourth Bombardment Group from Salinas Army Air Base until about June 1944, when it was closed. Sand-filled 25-pound practice bombs were fired against a conventional circular target marked on the ground. DOD disposed of 16.48 acres to private parties in July 1975 and 320 acres to private parties in August 1976. Therefore, 336.48 acres were transferred from DOD ownership prior to 17 October 1986. Of the remaining 1,600 acres of the Practice Bombing Range, 160 acres were never owned by, leased by, or otherwise possessed by DOD and are therefore ineligible for the FUDS program. The remaining 1,103.52 acres, which include the target, remain within the boundaries of Fort Hunter Liggett and are therefore ineligible for the FUDS program.
